Launch of Japanese Cultural Display at the National Library in commemoration of Golden Week
Golden Week (ゴールデンウィーク Gōruden Wīku), also known as Ōgata renkyū (大型連休) or Ōgon shūkan (黄金週間), is a celebration of the Japanese holidays during the first week of May. These holidays are:
Shōwa Day (昭和の日 Shōwa no hi): celebrated on April 29th, this holiday commemorates the birthday of former Emperor Showa, who passed away in the year 1989.
Constitution Memorial Day (憲法記念日 Kenpō kinenbi): celebrated on May 3rd this day commeorates the new post war constitution which was enacted in 1947.
Greenery Day みどりの日 Midori no hi): celebrated on May 4th this day is dedicated to the environment and nature.
Children's Day (こどもの日 Kodomo no hi), also customarily known as Boys' Day (端午の節句 Tango no sekku ) is celebrated on May 5th. Families pray for the health and future success of their sons by hanging up carp streamers and displaying samurai armor, both symbolizing strength, power and success in life.
In celebration of the Golden Week in Japanese Culture, The Embassy of Japan features a Cultural Display at the National Library in Port of Spain. This presentation of various aspects of Japanese Culture is at the Adult Library during May 3-15, 2010. This display was launched on May 3 at 10:00am with a brief presentation of books to the Library by Mr. Kiyoshi Takeuchi, Counsellor of the Embassy. In addition to this presentation, the Japanese Language and Culture Club was also launched. The club meetings will be scheduled for the second and fourth Friday of each month from 4:00pm-6:00pm.
The display includes features on Origami (art of folding paper), Furoshiki (art of wrapping flexible cloth), Manga (Japanese comic drawing), the kimono (Japanese wear), Boys’ Festival, pagodas and temples, dolls and toys. Short documentary video presentations can be viewed upon request at the Audio Visual Room of the Library.
This collaborative venture is part of the Embassy’s ongoing mission to promote cordial relations between Japan and Trinidad and Tobago by enhancing one’s knowledge of Japan and the Japanese society.
